Our programs are open to students and early-career journalists. The Going on Assignment course welcomes participants from anywhere in the world — past cohorts have come from more than 40 universities across the US, UK, Europe, Asia and Australia. The study-abroad internship program is designed for undergraduates of all years.

No. No prior international experience is required. The course is built to take you from the classroom to the field, with coaching at every step. Some journalism experience is helpful for the editorial internship track, but it isn't a requirement.

No — everything is taught and edited in English, and you don't need to speak Czech. For interviews in the field, we set you up with interpreters and local “fixers.” Any knowledge of the languages of our coverage region (Russian especially) is a welcome bonus, but it is never required.

It's short: you submit an application and schedule an interview, attend a 30-minute conversation about your background and what you want out of the program, and then arrive in Prague to start. For Going on Assignment 2027, you apply through our online application form.

Going on Assignment 2027 runs 10–25 July 2027. The tuition deadlines are the ones to watch: the Super Early-Bird rate closes 30 November 2026 and the Early-Bird rate closes 15 March 2027. If you want the optional field-reporting add-on after the course, arrange it with us by 1 April 2027.

Going on Assignment is a 15-day intensive in Prague (10–25 July 2027). The study-abroad internship program is longer — 6 or 8 weeks — and combines a full-time hybrid internship at Transitions (30–40 hours) with a concurrent course.

A mix of classroom and street. Mornings might be a panel with working foreign correspondents, a news-writing lab, or a visual-communication session; afternoons are spent reporting in the field, chasing your story, and preparing drafts. You'll also visit major Prague media institutions — including Seznam.cz and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. The full day-by-day itinerary is published on the Going on Assignment page.

Yes — that's the whole idea behind the Global Journalism Experience. You can take the course, do an internship, and add field reporting, or pick just the piece that fits. Field reporting runs as an optional add-on immediately after the main course.

That's the point of the program — you finish with a publishable piece of foreign reporting. Stories that meet our editorial standards are published in Transitions magazine and distributed globally through our syndication system. Yes — on the study-abroad internship program, you take a concurrent professional-development course that is valid for academic credit alongside your internship.

Credit is arranged through your home institution, so the exact process depends on your school. We work directly with university faculty and study-abroad offices to make it fit an existing journalism sequence — get in touch and we'll help you set it up with your department.

There are three tiers: Super Early-Bird at $2,500 / €2,450 (if you pay by 30 November 2026), Early-Bird at $2,800 / €2,650 (by 15 March 2027), and Standard at $3,350 / €3,200. Booking early saves you real money.

For Going on Assignment: full tuition, pre-course online learning, twin-room hotel accommodation with breakfast and wifi, a Prague public-transport pass, select social events (a welcome lunch, sightseeing, and a farewell boat cruise), and 21% VAT.

Travel to and from Prague, most meals, your visa and insurance, and personal expenses.

Possibly — scholarships and financial aid may be available for the study-abroad program. It's worth asking when you get in touch; email us and we'll tell you what's currently on offer.

For Going on Assignment: no fee before you pay a deposit; 25% until 31 January 2027; 50% from 1 February to 30 April 2027; and 100% from 1 May 2027 onwards.

Accommodation is included in the Going on Assignment fee — twin rooms (two people sharing) in a Prague hotel, with breakfast and wifi. We confirm the exact accommodation details with participants ahead of arrival.

Insurance is not included in the Going on Assignment course fee — you'll need to arrange your own cover before you travel. Terms differ between programs, so if you're applying to something other than the summer course, email us and we'll confirm what applies to you.

Prague is one of Europe's most beautiful and safest cities, and it's very manageable for newcomers. You don't need any Czech — the program runs in English, and we provide interpreters and local fixers when you're out reporting.

A lot. You get extensive coaching before you arrive and throughout your research and writing, help structuring your story and finding sources, assistance setting up interviews (including interpreters), and detailed one-on-one feedback on your drafts from Transitions editors and working correspondents.

Yes — this is one of the main things we do. We build tailor-made courses designed around your existing curriculum and your students, and we can handle the academic content, the logistics, or both.

We do. Full logistical coordination is part of the offer — housing, transportation, and scheduling — so your department doesn't have to manage any of it from abroad. We can also help with on-campus recruitment.

The earlier the better — custom programs are built around your semester and your syllabus, so more lead time means a better-fitting program. Email us and we'll work backwards from your dates to build a realistic timeline.
